Quickly change your IP address to connect to a robot

Postby ToddR » Thu Mar 15, 2012 12:11 pm

If you're running Windows, here is a quick way to change the IP address of your LAN port in order to connect to a robot without having to navigate through menus and change it manually every time.

To connect to the robot's maintenance port (1.2.3.4) your IP address needs to be 1.2.3.X. You can create a batch file to make this switch for you.

Start by creating a new text document using notepad. Paste in the following line:

netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection" static 1.2.3.5 255.255.255.0

For "Local Area Connection" fill in the exact name of the port you're interested in changing. This will match the name of the port as displayed from the Windows Control Panel (below.)

The arguments after "Local Area Connection" indicate that you want to use a static IP address of "1.2.3.5" with a subnet mask of "255.255.250"

Save the file, only instead of .txt, give the extension .bat

Now, double clicking this file will change your IP address for the specified port to 1.2.3.5 so you can connect to a robot's maintenance port.

To switch the address back to your typical IP address you can modify the file, or make another file with your old static IP address, or use the following line for DHCP (Obtain IP Address Automatically):

netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection" dhcp

I hope this saves you some time, thanks MarkL for the tip!

UPDATE!

If you're running windows 7, sometimes you'll need administrator access to run the command to change your IP address. If this is the case then right click on the file and check the box for "run as administrator" on the compatibility tab. If that option is grayed out you'll need to make a shortcut to the file, and right click the shortcut to access its properties. On the "shortcut" tab of the shortcut's properties click "advanced" then check the box for "run as administrator."

To add another method for changing IP addresses quickly, I'd recommend this simple program for Windows: TCP/IP Manager (Download from Sourceforge.net)

This software allows you to assign different IP configurations to hotkeys, so you can change quickly with just a keystroke.

NOTE: Make sure to click "Save current profile" after creating or editing a profile.
