AWC Floppy Disk Drive Installation Instructions

The Adept AWC Floppy Disk Drive (FDD) consists of two major components, the FDD board and the PMC-FDD card. The FDD board is a single-slot VME board with a floppy disk drive mounted. The PMC-FDD card is a PCI Mezzanine card that contains the floppy disk drive controller. The PMC-FDD card is installed on the FDD board at Adept and shipped as a single assembly.

This document describes how to install the FDD board into an Adept MV controller or an Adept Compact controller. Refer to the Adept MV Controller User’s Guide for more information on the controllers.

NOTE: The AWC Floppy Disk Drive requires the AWC-II processor board and V+ version 13.1 or later. The AWC Floppy Disk Drive is not compatible with the AWC Generation-I processor board.

Installing the FDD Board

CAUTION: You must follow ESD safety procedures when you install the FDD board, including the use of a properly grounded wrist strap.

To install the FDD Board, complete the following steps:

  1. Turn off the Adept controller.

  2. Remove the AWC-II board from the controller and place it on a safe surface with the component side of the board facing up.

  3. Take the FDD board out of the ESD protective bag.

  4. Position the FDD board above the AWC-II board and align the front panels.

  5. With the front panels aligned, slowly lower the FDD board onto the AWC-II board, ensuring that the three connectors on each board fit together.

  6. Turn the board assembly over and install the screws in the AWC-II board, using two long screws and four short screws. This step combines the boards into one unit and mates the connectors.

  7. Install the combined AWC-II/FDD board assembly into the controller as follows:
    a. In the Adept MV controller, move the installed boards one slot to the right. Install the AWC-II/FDD board into slots 1 and 2 at the far left.
    b. In an Adept C-40 or C-60 Compact controller, move the installed boards one slot to the left. Install the AWC-II/FDD board into slots 1 and 2 at the right side of the Adept MV-4 insert.

NOTE: Normally, the AWC-II board that is configured as the main processor must be installed in slot 1 (the far-right slot in a Compact controller). The FDD board is designed to allow the main AWC processor to be installed in slot 2.

  1. Turn on power to the controller and allow the V+ system (version 13.1 or later) to boot.

  2. Insert a floppy diskette into the drive, then type: fdir b: to verify that the floppy drive is functioning properly. You should see a directory listing of files present on the diskette, and a message reporting the number of unused and total sectors. If the diskette has not been formatted, the message "*Invalid disk format*" displays rather than the directory information.
